The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office Training and Professional Development Unit is responsible for the development, implementation and administration of all Sheriff’s Office training programs as well as the coordination of all training through other agencies, institutions and providers. This Unit coordinates and maintains records of all training conducted by and attended by members of the Laurens County Sheriff's Office. The Training Unit coordinates with other Deputies throughout the Sheriff’s Office who serve as auxiliary instructors and role players in addition to their primary daily assignments.
The Training Unit and auxiliary instructor staff provide many thousands of hours of training to Sheriff’s Office employees annually. These hours are comprised of Initial Field Training, basic and recurring training, and specialized and advanced training. The field training of new deputies is a vital supplement to the training received in the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. The initial exposure to Law Enforcement provided through the Field Training Program often shapes the future careers of new patrol deputies. Basic and recurring training is provided to maintain the professional standards of The Sheriff’s Office as well as to maintain the certifications necessary for today’s professional law enforcement officers. Deputies assigned to the Jail Division are required to complete 40-hours of pre-service training that is mandated by State Minimum Standards. State Minimum Standards mandates yearly training that is required of each deputy assigned to jail operations which includes:
